“JUMBO” Cover Letter

This is the May 1969 letter that accompanied the proposal to NIH for “JUMBO,” the idealized design for a pragmatic multiple risk factor trial in prevention of coronary heart disease. The letter is “proof” of the submission of a grant that was rejected by NIH on “policy grounds” and was never carried out. The Heart Institute personnel was in the same period planning it’s own RFP for an Institute-directed MRFIT, thus no funds were “available” for an investigator-initiated trial. No formal review, “pink sheets” or letter of rejection for JUMBO is available in NHLBI archives. The story of the reaction of the scientific community to this rejection is recounted here, and in the American Journal of Epidemiology for 2019. HB
