Jack Medalie, MD

1922 — 2006

Jack Medalie is a pioneer in CVD epidemiology with the study of cultural differences and risk factors in coronary disease in Israel.

A native of Minnesota’s iron range, he received his medical education at the University of Witwatersrand, South Africa in 1945 and an MPH from Harvard University in 1958. In the intervening years he served in World War II and directed a field hospital during the Israeli War of Independence, after which he founded a cooperative settlement and led a community health center in Jerusalem. He then became founding head of Family Medicine, first in Tel Aviv, and later at Case Western Reserve.

From 1963 he directed an NIH-sponsored study of cardiovascular disease epidemiology in Israel, The Israeli Ischemic Heart Disease Study, with pioneer colleagues Joseph Groen and Henry Neufeld, whose work is carried on by Uri Goldbourt. He was active early in the American Heart Association Council on Epidemiology and continued to teach and see patients until 1997. (HB)
