Geoffrey Rose, MD

1926 — 1993

Geoffrey Rose received his education at Oxford University and his medical training at St. Mary’s Hospital. Professor Rose led cardiovascular disease (CVD) epidemiology from his posts at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and St. Mary’s Hospital between the early 1960s and 1991 when he retired. He maintained his clinical appointments and hospital “rounding” throughout his academic career in epidemiology while he pioneered in teaching and in methodology, co-authored a WHO Manual on CVD Survey Methods, and directed numerous observational studies and trials of CVD risk and risk modification. He coordinated the WHO Multiple Risk Factor Trial in Industry and the UK component of the international study, INTERSALT.

Rose chaired an influential WHO Expert Report on population strategies of CVD prevention in the early 1980s, which attempted to integrate medical strategies into community prevention and public health. He closed his career with short powerful essays on preventive strategies both for “sick populations and sick individuals.” Geoffrey was regarded with great respect, admiration, and affection for his quiet authority, personal kindness, intellectual integrity, brilliant lectures, and lucid writing. He died much too young. (HB)
