Karen A. Matthews, PhD

Matthews is a pioneer in the epidemiology and experimental manipulation of behavior in respect to cardiovascular disease (CVD). She directs The Pittsburgh Mind-Body Center (PMBC) at the University of Pittsburgh. Matthews received her PhD in Psychology from the University of Texas, Austin, and has made her entire career at Pittsburgh.

Her research began with details of the method and meaning of Type A behavior and has continued to deal with gender differences in behavior as related to CVD risk and with women’s issues in risk throughout life.

Dr. Matthews has been a leader in the professional activities of the community of CVD epidemiology and prevention and a major advisor to National Institutes of Health (NIH) on behavior and health.
