Farguhar, John, MD (b.1927)

The first director of the Stanford Heart Disease Prevention Program, who was a pioneer in the concepts, design, and operation of community programs of health promotion. He was among the first to recognize that medical strategies were inherently inadeguate to prevent common chronic diseases and achieve a healthy population. With the collaboration of leading social scientists, Stanford's center led in the concepts of social learning and mass communications that guide all subsequent efforts in community health.

Farquhar began his career in lipid-metabolic studies at Rockefeller University and concludes his contributions with international efforts to influence health policy toward prevention.
