Gary Friedman, MD, MS

Gary Friedman was educated at Antioch College, received his MD from the University of Chicago in 1959 and an MS in statistics from Harvard in 1965. He was on the Framingham Study staff from 1962 to 1966 and then in the Heart Disease Control Program in San Francisco until 1968, when he became research scientist at the Division of Research (DOR) Kaiser Permanente Northern California. There he served for 30 years and as Director from 1991 to 1998. He is currently Consulting Professor, Department of Health Research and Policy, Stanford University School of Medicine.

Dr. Friedman was one of the first researchers to conduct epidemiological studies in the setting of a health maintenance organization where he studied the epidemiology of cardiovascular disease, cancer, and gallbladder disease, the health effects of tobacco, alcohol and drugs, and the evaluation of screening tests.

He served as President of the American Epidemiological Society and is author of a popular primer of epidemiology.

Relatively late in life Dr. Friedman took up the oboe and rapidly became an accomplished member of several California orchestras. He now pursues as well an active career in musical composition. (HB)
