Mary Winston, EdD

Born:

Mary Winston is a pioneer nutritionist with the American Heart Association and for three decades administered its Nutrition Committee. In this role she was central to arriving at consensus reports for international consumption by that prestigious group of experts.

Dr. Winston received both her MA and EdD at Columbia University and joined AHA in 1969 after working at the Kansas City Research Hospital and the Duke University Medical Center.

Her major contributions were in professional and public education through the masterful and authoritative nutritional recommendations of AHA over the years, but she also contributed to the National Cholesterol Education Program of NIH, and the Joint National Committee on Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure. She edited the widely circulated AHA Low-Fat, Low-Cholesterol Cookbook. She remains in active retirement at the AHA headquarters in Dallas. (HB)
