Gerardo Heiss, MD, PhD

Born:

Professor Heiss was born and educated in Chile and received an MD from the University of Chile in 1968, an MSc in Social Medicine from the University of London in 1973, and a PhD in Epidemiology from the University of North Carolina in 1976, remaining on the faculty at North Carolina as Professor and as Director of Graduate Studies.

Gerardo Heiss was early involved with the Evans County Study and in more recent years has played a central analytical role in the Family Heart Study and ARIC, with participation in a variety of those study’s prospective analyses in genetics, metabolic syndrome, hemostasis, carotid ultrasound, and lipids.

We put Heiss in our Unsung Heroes folder: always present and effective, yet quiet and self-deprecating. (HB)
