In the 1970s there was much skepticism about the concepts and practice of prevention of cardiovascular diseases (CVD), particularly the role of the practicing and academic specialist in cardiology. A representative of the American College of Cardiology explored this situation in the late 1970s with Henry Blackburn, Director of the U of Minnesota Laboratory of Physiological Hygiene, a pioneering center of research on the epidemiology and prevention of CVD.
