Crete, Greece: Follow-up Seven Countries Survey
Time Period: 1965

This family ceramic factory, near Arkanes, with amphora being cured by sunlight, had functioned in this location for centuries. However, by the survey of 1970, that ancient traditional enterprise was defunct, replaced by manufactured containers of non-biodegradable plastic. Most of the varied traditional agriculture and trades of the island, seat of ancient Minoan culture, were also quickly replaced by more modern technologies and by tourism as the principal economic activity.
