Tips & FAQs for a Better Field Experience

Testing the Waters

Field experiences are opportunities for students to explore elements of a career in public health nutrition. The best experiences are mutually beneficial; both student and preceptor gain something of use. Past students have described four main roles that field experiences serve:

  1. Window – a student has the opportunity to see or observe some particular area of interest, such as a field of practice, a technique, or a set of interactions.

  2. Door – the preceptor or agency helps the student gain access into the community, an agency, or a position.

  3. Buttress – the preceptor acts as support to allow the student to test and develop a skill. The preceptor may act as coach or guide, but the student is performing tasks and activities.

  4. Mirror – in this role, the agency staff or the preceptor reflect their perception of the students skills and abilities to function in a public health setting.

Most experiences combine various elements of these roles, and you will think of other expectations for your own field experience. Use the tools, tips, and FAQs to plan for a good match!
