Interviews with elders
It is customary in the American Indian community that elders be consulted first on any issue of importance. Steering Council members participated in interviewer training and then conducted interviews with community elders. Fifty interviews were completed and results were used to guide the development of the next phase of research.
Talking Circles with elders
In August 2004, four talking circles were held with elders.
Two of the talking circles were held in the city, one took
place on a Dakota reservation, and one talking circle was
held at an Ojibwe reservation. There are many similarities
between what the elders said in the urban area and the opinions
of elders who live on the reservations. Steering Council members
used standard qualitative analysis techniques to summarize
the information. A report of these findings is available here.
