    Age Group-Design Research

Adult Focused Research:

Interviews with adults -   American Indian interviewers surveyed 300 American Indian adults living in Minneapolis-St. Paul in 2005 about tobacco use and perceptions, using a structured in-person interview. Snowball sampling was used to obtain a participant distribution reflecting the census distribution of ages 18 to 65 and older, and men and women in the Twin Cities area. A complete report on our findings is available here.

Focus groups with adults - Using the Reality-Based Research Model, follow-up focus groups will be held fall 2005 with a sample of the interview participants to gain insight into the interpretation of the findings.

Elder Focused Research:

Interviews with elders
It is customary in the American Indian community that elders be consulted first on any issue of importance. Steering Council members participated in interviewer training and then conducted interviews with community elders. Fifty interviews were completed and results were used to guide the development of the next phase of research.

Talking Circles with elders
In August 2004, four talking circles were held with elders. Two of the talking circles were held in the city, one took place on a Dakota reservation, and one talking circle was held at an Ojibwe reservation. There are many similarities between what the elders said in the urban area and the opinions of elders who live on the reservations. Steering Council members used standard qualitative analysis techniques to summarize the information. A report of these findings is available here.

Youth Focused Research:

Focus groups with youth -  The Steering Council will utilize information gained from elders and adults to approach youth in fall 2005 about the best way to gather information on urban American Indian youth tobacco use and misuse.

Surveys with youth - In early 2006, 600 American Indian youth will be surveyed about tobacco use and perceptions. Specific methods will be based on the results of the youth focus groups.
