Development of legal policy initiatives and effective use of communications to shape the public agenda, health policy, tobacco and law

Professional Experience:
  In May 1998, reached a landmark settlement with the tobacco industry,
ending the use of tobacco billboards and branded merchandise in Minnesota, and imposed the first-ever injunction against marketing aimed at youth.

Filed the first anti-trust lawsuit against the tobacco industry in the fall of 1994.

Represented 31 states in supporting states' power to order disclosure of chemical additives in cigarettes(1997).

Helped lead a 27-state effort to encourage stores to reduce illegal sales to children(1994). Helped organize a 16 state effort to encourage fast food restaurants to go smoke-free(1993).

Promoted a ban on distribution of free tobacco samples(1986).
 

Honors:
  Named one of the 25 Most Influential Minnesotans at the ACS Great American Smokeout’s 25th Anniversary, 2001.

World Health Organization Tobacco Free World Prize 1999.

American Lung Association of New York 13 Annual Life and Breath
Award.

Recipient of the American Legacy Award, February 2001, Legacy Foundation.

Recipient of the Let Freedom Ring Award, February 2001, Minnesota
Governor's Council on Developments Disabilities.

Recipient of the Minnesota Health Award, May 2001, American Diabetes Association.
