National Children's Study Speaker Series

The National Children's Study Speaker Series presents Fatherhood in the 21st Centry: From Pregnancy Planning to Parenting, with Robert "Clarence" Jones, MA; Community Outreach Director, Southside Community Health Services/QHealth Connections.

The Center for Excellence in Children's Mental Health in partnership with the Center for Advanced Studies in Child Welfare and the Harris Programs at the University of Minnesota is excited to announce the first workshop in the 2009-2010 Lessons from the Field Seris: "Race Culture and Children's Mental Health" on December 4.

The first workshop: "Historical Trauma, Microaggressions, and Identity: A Framework for Culturally-based Practice" will be presented by Karina Walters, Ph.D., University of Washington, Indigenous Wellness Research Institute and West Coast Poverty Center.

Dr. Walters, a member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, founded and directs the university-wide, Interdisciplinary Indigenous Wellness Research Institute at the University of Washington and is an affiliate faculty of the West Coast Poverty Center. Her research focuses on historical, social, and cultural determinants of physical and mental health among Native American individuals, families and communities as well as cultures of poverty and two-spiritedness.

Strong Foundations Conference & MN Fatherhood Summit

The seventh annual Minnesota Fatherhood Summit and the 5th annual Strong Foundations Conference will be offered collaboratively as one joint conference in January 2010.

The conference theme will focus on the healthy engagement of fathers. The conference aims to strengthen the knowledge, skills, strategies and alliances of those who help expectant families, infants, toddlers, mothers, fathers, other caregivers, and all communities to build a strong foundation for healthy development. The conference will offer the opportunity for in-depth, research-based, practical training as well as exposure to a wider variety of topics from different fields.
