DIGS: Dietetic Internship for Graduate
Students
A Dietetic Internship for Graduate Students (DIGS) program is
available to students who have completed a didactic undergraduate
program that is accredited by the American Dietetic Association.
This 6-month internship program can be combined with the 16-month
MPH program so that the student can complete a masters degree and
an ADA approved dietetic internship within 2 years.
Traineeships
Graduate students who enroll in the MPH program can specialize in maternal
and child nutrition by selecting from a variety of elective courses in public
health nutrition or maternal and child health and by completing field experiences
and a masters project related to this topic. Several Maternal and Child
Nutrition Traineeships are available to Registered Dietitians who wish to
pursue a MPH degree and specialize in maternal and child nutrition.
If you are a RD interested in applying for a traineeship, please request
an application for the traineeship along with your request for MPH Program
materials. If you have already applied for the MPH program and now wish
to apply for the traineeship contact a graduate studies coordinator via
telephone at (612) 626-8802 or by e-mail at gradstudies@epi.umn.edu for
traineeship application materials. The U.S. Maternal and Child Health
Bureau, Health Resources and Services Administration, U.S. Department
of Health and Human Services fund these traineeships. All traineeships
provide tuition assistance and a monthly stipend.
Fellowships
The LET Program also has pre-or post-doctoral Fellowships or sabbatical
leaves available to support Registered Dietitians who wish to specialize
in the field of maternal and child nutrition. Students enrolled in the
PhD program in Nutrition, with a declared specialization in public health
nutrition, or individuals who have previously completed a PhD (or equivalent
degree) can apply for a pre- and post-doctoral fellowships or sabbatical
leave by contacting stang@epi.umn.edu. The U.S. Maternal and Child Health
Bureau, Health Resources and Services Administration, U.S. Department of
Health and Human Services fund these fellowships.
