Graduate and Post-doctoral Research and Education Specializing in Maternal and Child Nutrition

The University of Minnesota Leadership, Education and Training Program in Maternal and Child Nutrition offers graduate and postdoctoral training programs for health professionals who wish to specialize in maternal and child nutrition. Programs of graduate study are available at both masters and doctoral levels.

The University of Minnesota, School of Public Health offers a Masters of Public Health (MPH) degree in Public Health Nutrition.

MPH Program

This program draws upon principals of nutrition, human growth and development, epidemiology, general public health and program development and administration to provide a well-rounded graduate curriculum.

The length of study for the graduate program varies by the academic background and previous experience and training of applicants. Individuals who are Registered Dietitians with three or more years of experience in public health or nutrition can complete the program in 12 months. Individuals with an undergraduate degree in dietetics or human nutrition can complete the program in 16 months. Individuals with no formal training in nutrition or dietetics but who have a strong background in the biological and physical sciences can complete the program in as little as 24 months.

The School of Public Health has a toll-free telephone number (1-800-774-8636) for out-of-state prospective students that can also be used to request application materials. PhD Program

The Department of Food Science and Nutrition offers a multi-disciplinary PhD program with a specialization in public health nutrition, in collaboration with the Division of Epidemiology. The Graduate School awards the PhD degree. Application materials for the PhD program can be obtained by contacting the Department of Food Science and Nutrition at 612-624-1290 or by visiting their website at http://fscn.che.umn.edu. Applicants who are interested in the public health nutrition specialization must specify that option on the application materials and are encouraged to contact public health nutrition faculty directly to discuss research interests. Faculty associated with the LET Program who are also faculty of the PhD program in nutrition include: Drs. Lisa Harnack, John Himes, Dianne Neumark-Sztainer, and Mary Story.
