Paul White – Ancel Keys Correspondence
This collection of letters between the to Co-directors of the Research Committee of the International Society and Federation of Cardiology covers an active period of the two Makarska Conferences (1963 and 1968), the first two Ten-day International Seminars of CVD Epidemiology (Makarska and Pioppi), and the organizing of the Council in 1965 at Venice and 1966 in New Delhi.
Their problems are money, travel, and “difficult people.” Institutions are born and bred by the enterprise of such leaders. The vision and goals of Keys and White are to define and stimulate research and training in CVD epidemiology and prevention research and practice among world leaders and young investigators of cardiology. This activity should create and forward international peace and collaboration during the Cold War Period. The residual today, 50 years later, includes the Ten-day International and U.S. Tahoe seminars, still well attended; hanging on by their teeth financially. HB
