This site presents a history of the research of investigators among whole populations as they worked in tandem with clinical and bench scientists to seek the causes of common heart and blood vessel diseases and the potential for their prevention.

The site is directed especially toward students of medicine, public health, and the history of science, but aims to be accessible to all. It provides an overview of 20th century research, its origins, early era, and “modern” era, with links to biographies of early investigators, abstracts of studies with references to key sources, and oral histories from pioneers and early leaders in the field. It also provides editorial essays, with narrative and perspective about a variety of studies, methods, institutions, events, historic reports, and risk factor findings. Finally, the multimedia section contains historic photographs, videos, audio clips, and letters and documents .
