LOCAL POLICIES TO RESTRICT
HIGH-ALCOHOL-CONTENT BEVERAGES

This site provides resources to advocates and policymakers interested in exploring the use of local policies to restrict retail sales of problematic beverages such as malt liquor and fortified wine. Malt liquor and fortified wine are inexpensive, high-alcohol beverages that have been associated with health and social problems for individual consumers, as well as with public drinking and a spectrum of nuisance crimes in the neighborhoods where they are sold.

The information provided here is based on a study of the experiences of over 30 cities in the U.S. who have addressed these problems through the adoption of local policies to restrict sales. The information on specific policies was current as of September, 2008.
