ABOUT THE ALCOHOL EPIDEMIOLOGY PROGRAM

The Alcohol Epidemiology Program (AEP) is a research program in the Division of Epidemiology and Community Health within the School of Public Health at the University of Minnesota (Minneapolis campus).

OUR MISSION

The mission of the AEP is to conduct advanced research to discover effective community and policy interventions to reduce alcohol-related social and health problems. Recent studies have focused on:

• effects of alcohol compliance checks
• illegal alcohol sales at community festivals
• community organizing efforts
• community prevention trials
• alcohol-involved traffic crashes
• training of alcohol outlet managers and servers
• natural experiments with changes in state and local alcohol policies
• effects of macroeconomic conditions on drinking rates
• alcohol sales to youth and obviously intoxicated patrons
• density of alcohol establishments
• malt liquor availability and promotion

The Alcohol Epidemiology Program is directed by Traci L. Toomey, Ph.D.

The program was founded by Alexander C. Wagenaar, PhD, who directed the program from 1991-2004. We thank Dr. Wagenaar for his leadership throughout his tenure with the AEP.  Dr. Wagenaar is currently Professor of Epidemiology & Health Policy Research at the University of Florida College of Medicine, Gainesville.

The AEP receives funding from grants from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
